The head of the U.N. refugee agency met the Pakistani prime minister to discuss the situation of Afghan refugees living in uncertainty since Islamabad began a persistent anti-migrant crackdown last year. Pakistan has long hosted an estimated 1.7 million Afghans. Since the widely criticized clampdown started in November, an estimated 600,000 Afghans have returned home. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi said his visit was to “discuss how we can best support" the Afghan refugees and Pakistan. Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif urged the international community to “recognize the burden being shouldered” by his country.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says rescue operations have stretched into a second day at a major Kyiv children’s hospital struck by a Russian missile. Zelenskyy said 38 people were killed and almost 200 injured in the daytime barrage that smashed into cities across the country on Monday. Zelenskyy said on the social platform X Tuesday that 64 people were hospitalized in the capital as well as 28 in Kryvyi Rih and six in Dnipro — both in central Ukraine. It was Russia’s heaviest bombardment of Kyiv in almost four months. The strike on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital, which interrupted open-heart surgery and forced young cancer patients to take their treatments outdoors, drew an international outcry.

A suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels has targeted a ship in the Gulf of Aden. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said the captain of the ship reported an explosion in close proximity to the vessel off the coast of Nishtun, Yemen, close to the country’s border with Oman. The ship and crew are safe. The center did not elaborate on what caused the explosion, though the Houthis have been known to use drones and missiles as well as bomb-carrying drone boats. The rebels have targeted more than 60 vessels and killed four sailors in their attacks. They've also seized one vessel and sank two since November.

A driverless ride-hailing car in China hit a pedestrian, and people on social media are taking the carmaker’s side, because the person was reportedly crossing against the light. Chinese tech giant Baidu said in a statement to Chinese media that its car began moving when the light turned green and had minor contact with the pedestrian. Images posted online show a person sitting on the street in front of the driverless car with its rooftop sensors. The Chinese financial news outlet Yicai said the incident on Sunday in the city of Wuhan highlights the challenge that autonomous driving faces in complex situations.

At least 27 people, including 19 police and other government personnel, have been injured when a large pile of confiscated illegal fireworks exploded in a powerful blast in the southern Philippines, damaging houses, hotels and an international airport. Officials say two of the victims of Monday afternoon’s explosion are in serious condition. The mayor of the southern port city of Zamboanga ordered an investigation into why the planned controlled destruction of the fireworks turned into a massive blast. Police explosives experts were piling the fireworks in a clearing for a controlled detonation when the large heap, which had been doused with water, suddenly exploded. The blast shattered windows as far as three kilometers (nearly two miles) away.
