Is Universal Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights worth it? ›

Although the posted wait time for rides is high, there's a 50-50 shot you can run all the way to the front of the line and hop on. Overall, the experience of Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights is worth it if you are truly interested in horror and meeting like-minded people. The lines will be long, yes.

Halloween Horror Nights is a separate ticket from regular park admission. Universal Studios Hollywood also sells a Halloween Horror Nights Universal Express Pass (formerly called Front of Line Pass). The HHN Universal Express Pass is good for one-time Express access for each house and ride.

As such, HHN is legit scary. Inside all of the haunted houses, real people will jump at you, sneak up behind you and shadow you as you try to get from Point A to Point B. There will be scary sounds, special effects, wailing, screaming and general aural discomfort.

This event WILL sell out and if it does, tickets will not be available at the front gate on the night of the event..

If you only purchase a General Admission ticket for any of the Universal Studios theme parks, you must exit at closing time on Halloween Horror Nights dates. If you purchase a separate HHN evening ticket or a Day/Night ticket, you can remain in the park from opening to close.

Halloween Horror Nights Scare Zones

Expect to be terrified and harassed by creatures of the night. These scare actors come out of nowhere and have no illusions about respecting your personal space (although they are not allowed to touch you, and you are not allowed to touch them)!

During regular hours, Universal Studios Hollywood allows guests to bring bottled water and small snacks into the park. However, this is unfrogtunately not the case during Halloween Horror Nights. During HHN hours, no outside food or beverages are allowed inside Universal Studios Hollywood.

Get in line for the early Access Mazes before 5 p.m. This ticket is the only HHN ticket that includes Super Nintendo World during the event from 7 to 10 p.m. A virtual line could be in use. Even if you do not have Early Entry or a 2 p.m. ticket, arrive an hour before the event begins. Lines to enter can be long.

Halloween night is a very popular night to attend HHN, but if you can skip it, you should. Crowds will be very high, meaning extremely long wait times. You should go earlier in HHN season, mid-to-late September and early October, to get the best ticket prices and avoid the crowds that just can't miss HHN on Halloween.

Orlando may have slightly beat Hollywood out on houses and scare zones, but overall, it's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood that takes the crown this year. The entire event is solid with all its new additions and fave returns.

Note that the park is officially open for regular operations until 5 p.m., but you'll want to enter before 4:30 p.m. to avoid dealing with the arriving evening crowds.

Dress for comfort

Wearing comfortable clothes is key for standing in long queues for the haunted houses. Shoes that can withstand walking 10 miles are also a necessity. It's rarely cold in Florida, but there have been a couple of times when I needed a jacket. Again, check the weather and be prepared!

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood is the scariest night of the season in Los Angeles — but it's also the fastest. The event officially kicks off at 7 p.m. and lasts until 1 or 2 a.m. on select nights in September and October.
